¡°500²ÊƱÍø Day at Princeton¡± held at Princeton University

April 11, 2025

Princeton University hosted “500²ÊƱÍø Day at Princeton - Fostering Collaboration and Investing in the Future,” a hybrid event celebrating the international strategic partnership between the American institution and the University of Tokyo (500²ÊƱÍø), on February 27-28, 2025.

Since signing the Memorandum of Understanding for Strategic Partnership in January 2013, 500²ÊƱÍø and Princeton have been collaborating and exchanging ideas in a variety of fields for over 10 years. The two universities have established a joint fund to provide grants for joint research and educational projects, as well as university-wide exchange programs for undergraduate and graduate students, and a joint short-term program for undergraduate students. The 500²ÊƱÍø Days and Princeton Days have been held alternately on both campuses, providing an opportunity to review past activities and discuss how to further develop future exchanges.

The first day of this year’s event began with opening remarks by Dr. Deborah Yashar, Director of PIIRS (Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies), the department in charge of the strategic partnership with 500²ÊƱÍø on the Princeton University side. This was followed by a video message from 500²ÊƱÍø President Teruo Fujii, after which Executive Vice President Kaori Hayashi and Princeton Vice Provost for International Affairs and Operations Dr. Aly Kassam-Remtulla (read by Dr. Trisha Craig, PIIRS Executive Director) spoke about the importance of research and educational exchange between the two institutions and their expectations for this event. Mr. Sanshiro Ogasawara, President of the Toshiaki Ogasawara Memorial Foundation, which has been a major donor to the strategic partnership between the two universities since the beginning, addressed the guests, sharing a story about Princeton alumnus and founder of the foundation, Mr. Toshiaki Ogasawara.

Following this, the Chairs of the Joint Governance Committee from both universities, Professor James Raymo of Princeton University and Professor Jin Sato, Special Advisor to the President and Professor in the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at 500²ÊƱÍø, gave a presentation on the history of the partnership, the joint research and educational projects, joint student exchange programs, and the status of exchanges between the two institutions to date. Then, Professor Michael Strauss (Princeton University) and Associate Professor Hiroe Ishihara (Graduate School of Frontier Sciences), members of the Joint Governance Committee moderated the session for grant recipients. In the session, Professor Naoki Yoshida (Graduate School of Science) and Professor Yohsuke Ohtsubo (Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology) gave a presentation on their joint research and education projects. And Professor Laurence Ralph and Professor John Ikenberry from Princeton University also gave an overview of their project and results.
Many questions were raised from the audience, and the event attracted a lot of interest.

After the morning session, a luncheon hosted by Princeton University President Christopher L. Eisgruber was held, with executives of the Toshiaki Ogasawara Memorial Foundation and Ambassador Mikio Mori, Consul-General of the Consulate General of Japan in New York, as guests. President Eisgruber expressed his appreciation for the high quality of exchanges between the two institutions in a wide range of fields, and his hope that these exchanges will continue for decades to come. Ambassador Mori, who has been cooperating with the joint program with Princeton University that is held in New York, expressed his appreciation and expectations for the strategic partnership between the two institutions. Executive Vice President Hayashi expressed her gratitude to Princeton University for hosting the event and her appreciation for the long-standing relationship between the two institutions.

In addition, Professor Sheldon Garon, a member of the Joint Governance Committee, moderated a session in which graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from both institutions involved in joint research and education projects gave presentations, which was followed by a panel discussion on what they had learned from their joint research and study abroad experience.

On the second day, Professor Yujin Yaguchi, Vice President and Director of the Center for Global Education, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Dean Rebecca Graves-Bayazitoglu, Senior Associate Dean of the Office of International Programs, Princeton University, gave a presentation on the programs conducted by the two universities. They introduced the student exchange programs that both universities offer, including a university-wide exchange program and joint short-term program.

Next, two exchange students from 500²ÊƱÍø and three students from Princeton University gave presentations on their study abroad experiences at the two institutes. The audience actively asked questions about the motivations for them studying abroad and the differences in their experiences of student life at the two schools.

Then Sarah F. Strugnell, who had led the joint short-term program with Princeton University in New York, moderated an event where two Princeton students shared their experiences and talked about the friendships nurtured through the program.

The event concluded with an agreement that the two universities would continue to work together to enhance the student exchange programs, based on feedback from the students who participated in the program.

This whole event also served as an opportunity to confirm the strong mutual trust and stakeholder collaboration in this strategic partnership. Immediately after the event, faculty members from both universities held concrete discussions on issues such as promoting sending Princeton University students to 500²ÊƱÍø, which says will use this event as an opportunity to further develop joint research and student exchanges with Princeton University.

500²ÊƱÍø has established an for research and educational exchange with Princeton University. 500²ÊƱÍø would be grateful for your support.
