Torquil Duthie was born in the United Kingdom and grew up in Cádiz, Spain. He is professor of Japanese literature in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the author of Man’y¨sh¨± and the Imperial Imagination in Early Japan (Brill, 2014) (Japanese translation, Man’y¨sh¨± to teikokuteki s¨z¨, forthcoming from Kach¨sha, 2023) and The Kokinsh¨±: Selected Poems (Columbia University Press, 2023).
